City of Barrie Collaboration

The RCAF and Trees for Life collaborated with the City of Barrie to create two landscape designs featuring the RCAF Roundel in Barrie’s Military Heritage Park. One RCAF floral roundel is designed in blue and red annual flowers separated by a white decorative landscape rock, intended to be replanted each year. The 34-foot diameter roundel is located to permit visitor viewing from the air, the adjacent walkway, and from Kempenfelt Bay.

A second roundel feature created with interlock pavers and is located on the far eastern border of the Military Heritage Park. This permanently installed roundel showcases a maple leaf in the centre with a shrub border.

At a special ceremony on June 20th, 2024 in Military Heritage Park, the Honourable Edith Dumont, Ontario Lieutenant General, joined Mark Cullen and Mike Hurley of Trees for Life, Colonel Gabriel Dore of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall to unveil these two roundels. In total, 13 trees were planted, one for each province and territory, plus 100 bayberry shrubs, one for each year of public service by the RCAF were planted at this memorial by Air Squadron 102 cadets.

This commemorative grove would not be possible without the dedication and support of important industry partners. Our special thanks to those that have supported this project.

Trees have been planted in this location in honour of:
